Pierce's Bio

Brosnan was born in County Meath, Ireland and moved to London at age 11. At 20, he enrolled in drama school and while in London, performed in several West End stage productions including Franco Zeffirelli’s “Fulimena” and Tennessee Williams’ “The Red Devil Battery Sign” at the York Theater Royal. Before landing the role of James Bond, Brosnan had achieved worldwide recognition as private investigator Remington Steele on the popular television series of the same name. He lives in California and Hawaii with his wife Keely Shaye and their two children Dylan and Paris.

PIERCE BROSNAN is recognized internationally as one of the most dashing and skilled dramatic actors in Hollywood today. In 2005, Brosnan received a Golden Globe® Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor for his role as Julian Noble in the critically acclaimed film “The Matador.”

Brosnan recently completed filming "Marriage," written and directed by Ira Sacks. Co-Starring Chris Cooper, Patricia Clarkson and Rachel McAdams, “Marriage” is a 1940s-set drama about a married man who cheats; to spare his wife the shame of a divorce, he plots to kill her.

In addition to his work in front of the camera, Brosnan has always had an interest in the art of filmmaking. Having achieved international stardom as an actor, Brosnan expanded the range of his film work by launching his own production company, Irish DreamTime in 1996, along with producing partner Beau St. Clair.

Apart from “The Matador,” Irish DreamTime has produced four films to date: "The Nephew” (1998), “The Thomas Crown Affair” (1999), “Evelyn” (2002) and “Laws of Attraction” (2004). The company's first studio project, “The Thomas Crown Affair,” was a critical and box-office success and one of the best-reviewed and highest-grossing romantic thrillers in years. “Evelyn,” directed by Bruce Beresford, opened to critical acclaim at the Toronto and Chicago Film Festivals and also garnered rave reviews. “Laws of Attraction,” a romantic comedy, which teamed Brosnan with Julianne Moore, focused on dueling divorce attorneys who fall in love.

In early 2007, look for Irish DreamTime’s sixth production “Shattered” in which Brosnan stars with Maria Bello and Gerard Butler. The psychological thriller, centers on a happy couple with a seemingly perfect life whose daughter is abducted. Over the course of a day, the kidnapper dismantles the family's lives with brutal efficiency.

Perhaps best known worldwide as James Bond, Brosnan reinvigorated the popularity of the Bond legacy in box-office blockbusters such as “Goldeneye” (1995), “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1999), “The World Is Not Enough” (1999) and “Die Another Day” (2002). Brosnan's first three Bond films earned over a billion dollars at the international box-office. His most recent Bond film, “Die Another Day,” was the most successful Bond film ever, garnering nearly a half-billion dollars worldwide. In addition to his four Bond films, three other Brosnan film -- “The Thomas Crown Affair,” “Dante's Peak” (1997) and “The Lawnmower Man” (1992) have earned hundreds of millions of dollars internationally, cementing him as one of the world’s most bankable stars.

Brosnan's other film credits include John Boorman's critically acclaimed film from the John LeCarre novel, “The Tailor of Panama” (2001), Bruce Beresford's “Mr. Johnson” (1990) and Sir Richard Attenborough's “Grey Owl” (1999). In addition to “The Matador,” Brosnan has also shown his comedic skills in such films as “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993) and “Mars Attacks!” (1996). He also had a supporting role alongside Barbra Streisand in “The Mirror Has Two Faces” (1996).

Some of his many accolades include a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2002 Chicago Film Festival, the International Star of the Year at the Cinema Expo in Amsterdam, an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the Dublin Institute of Technology, an Honorary Doctorate from the University College Cork and an Order of the British Empire bestowed by Her Majesty the Queen.

Brosnan married Australian actress Cassandra Harris in 1980 and adopted her two children, Charlotte (born 27 November 1971) and Christopher (born October 6, 1972) after their father died in 1986. Brosnan and Harris had one son together, Sean (birth 13 September 1983). Harris died of ovarian cancer in 1991. In 2001, Brosnan married American journalist Keely Shaye Smith,  and they have two sons together, Dylan Thomas Brosnan (birth 13 January 1997) and Paris Beckett Brosnan (birth 27 February 2001).

Brosnan supported John Kerry in the 2004 Presidential election and is a vocal supporter of gun control and same-sex marriage. An outspoken environmentalist, Brosnan was named 'Best-dressed Environmentalist' in 2004 by the Sustainable Style Foundation.Brosnan first became aware of nuclear disarmament at the age of nine when worldwide condemnation of the 1962 U.S. nuclear tests in Nevada headlined international news.

During the 1990s, he participated in news conferences in Washington, D.C. to help Greenpeace draw attention to the issue.Brosnan boycotted the French GoldenEye premiere to support Greenpeace's protest against the French nuclear testing program. From 1997 to 2000, Brosnan and wife Smith worked with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Internationa l Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to stop a proposed salt factory from being built at Laguna San Ignacio. The couple with Halle Berry, Cindy Crawford and Daryl Hannah successfully fought the Cabrillo Port Liquefied Natural Gas facility that was proposed off the coast of Malibu and would cause damage to the marine life there; the State Lands Commission eventually denied the lease to build the terminal. in May 2007, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the facility. Brosnan is also listed as a member of the Sea Shepherd's Board of Advisors.

Brosnan also raises money for charitable causes through sales of his paintings. He trained early on as an artist, but later shifted to theatre; during his first wife's terminal illness, he withdrew from acting to be with her and took up painting again for therapeutic reasons, producing colorful landscapes and family portraits. He has continued painting since then, using spare time on set and at home. Profits from sales of giclée prints of his works are given to a trust to benefit "environmental, children's and women's health charities." Since Harris's death, Brosnan has been an advocate for cancer awareness and, in 2006, he served as spokesperson for Lee National Denim Day, a breast cancer fundraiser which raises millions of dollars and raises more money in a single day than any other breast cancer fundraiser.

In May 2007, Brosnan and Smith donated $100,000 to help replace a playground on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where they own a home. On  7 July 2007, Brosnan presented a film at Live Earth in London. He also recorded a television advertisement for the cause.

Pierce Brosnan's Newsletter

Newsletter from Pierce

 Dear Friends,

Happy Earth Day.

In celebration of Earth Day, I thought it fitting to pay tribute to Fred Krupp and Mariam Horn's new book, EARTH: The Sequel (The Race to Reinvent Energy and Stop Global Warming). Fred and Mariam's message is profound; once effective federal legislation to cap global warming pollution and establish an emissions trading system is passed, the multi-trillion dollar race toward the new energy sector will be unleashed and thus there will be no need for mankind to continue denigrating our environment because of our fierce addiction to fossil fuel.

Environmental Defense Fund is a great organization and I urge you to visit their website www.edf.org to learn more.

Many of your e-mails have requested a top 10 list of “daily things to do” to promote environmental consciousness. I hope this list inspires you to find a number of ways to protect the planet that are meaningful to you.

1) Eat organic and buy fruits, vegetables, herbs, cheese, eggs, honey and other food products at farmer’s markets which support local farmers and growers. No farms…no food.

2) Use eco-friendly products and services. Purchase all-natural, organic household cleaners, recycled paper products, organic cotton, and non-GMO food products. Locate an organic dry cleaner. Hire an eco-friendly gardening or car service.

3) Recycle everything possible, including printer cartridges, paper products, newspaper, plastic, glass, aluminum cans, cell phones, computers, etc... and cut paper consumption by using e-mail.

4) Give back – support individuals and organizations who are doing extraordinary work for our planet. Over the years The Brosnan Trust has distributed more than one million dollars to environmental organizations, schools, activists, women’s healthcare and various animal and children’s charities.

5) Plant an organic garden or a victory garden– for yourself or a friend and promote green living.

6) Compost kitchen scraps-- from banana peels to coffee grounds, and green waste. Purchase a rotating or stackable composter and start a green waste pile that can be used to fortify your garden naturally.

7) Promote environmental education. We currently fund environmental programs for kindergarten thru grade 12 (Roots and Shoots) in California and helped pass legislation which requires the state of California to design environmental curriculum for all its students.

8) Donate to off set your emissions (plant trees with Tree people; pay a carbon tax when traveling in environmentally sensitive areas, etc).

9) Design an eco friendly home that features energy efficient appliances, low flow and/or composting toilets, state of the art solar technology, recycled grey water, reclaimed hardwoods, and non-toxic paint and building materials.

10) Speak up -- use your voice and speak out about important environmental issues (examples over the past 13 years: stopping BHP’s LNG Terminal off the coast of Oxnard and Malibu, Mitsubishi from building a massive salt factory in Lagoon San Ignacio, protesting the US Navy harming whales with sonar and the French Government’s nuclear testing program in the South Pacific, promoting Dolphin Safe Tuna and supporting the Heritage Tree Bill.)

In the words of my dear friend Jane Goodall;

“Only if we understand can we care,

Only if we care will we help,

Only if we help shall all be saved.”

One person can and does make a difference. What kind of difference do you want to make?

The trailers for Mamma Mia are now playing in theaters. I hope the pure joy we all felt while making the movie shines through. Since the completion of Mamma Mia last fall I have been in Hawaii with my family, making the commute back and forth to Los Angeles and London for various meetings on future projects including the sequel to The Thomas Crown Affair.

On this Earth Day, I wish you and yours peace and joy.
