Brosnan out for shopping

Remington Steel Goes Shopping with the Boys

Ex-James Bond and Remington Steel star Pierce Brosnan, 55, was out shopping in Malibu recently and brought along his sons Paris and Dylan. Brosnan enjoyed a meaty role in "Mamma Mia!" this year and will be out in a film adaptation of Robert Harris' novel "The Ghost" next year.

Mamma Mia! recordbreaker

Mamma Mia! recordbreaker

strongest debut for a musical

There was another record-breaker at theaters this weekend

(weekend of 20th sept)

, and it didn't involve men in bat suits.

Mamma Mia!, the ABBA-inspired film starring Meryl Streep, quietly enjoyed the strongest debut for a musical. If estimates hold, Mamma Mia!'s $27.6 million opening will squeak by Hairspray, which set the mark last year with $27.5 million.

MM saved theathre from closure

Theatre saved from closure by Mamma Mia!

source ; walesonline.co.uk

THE oldest theatre in Wales, set to shut for good this month because it had run out of money, has been saved thanks to hit Abba musical film Mamma Mia!

The 150-year-old Savoy Theatre in Monmouth, a cinema run by a charitable trust which relies on audiences and donations to survive, announced just four weeks ago that it could not stay open beyond September.

Mamma Mia!, which stars Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, was destined to be the last movie shown at the venue before closing its doors for the last time.

But record audiences packed out the 400-seat cinema throughout the feel-good film’s two-week run and, as a result, the trust now has enough cash to keep it open well into 2009 and is planning beyond next year.

Trust director Vic Bignell said yesterday: “We had sunk thousands of pounds into the Savoy, hoping to give the oldest theatre in Wales a bright future.

“We get no subsidies or grants from any organisations. We rely entirely on people coming into the cinema but unfortunately we were just not attracting enough of an audience to make it viable.

“I don’t know why. The Savoy is the only cinema in Monmouthshire, and the next nearest cinemas are 20 miles away in Newport, South Wales, and Coleford in the Forest of Dean.”

Despite showing the latest film releases and staging big-name shows, the cinema struggled to bring in enough people to cover the electricity bills on some evenings – with as few as five people turning up for some screenings.

“It was a chicken-and-egg situation,” added Mr Bignell. “If we didn’t get the people in, we couldn’t afford to advertise which films were on, but if we didn’t advertise the films, the people didn’t come. The last two weeks when we have showed Mamma Mia! have changed all that.

“It was going to be our last film but we have had our busiest fortnight ever. We knew it was a big international hit movie but we had no idea that it was going to save our existence. Abba are certainly unlikely saviours for a cinema in Monmouth.”

Mr Bignell, 70, said the global hit’s feel-good factor seemed to have had an effect on the locals to turn out in force.

“Despite having to give the film distributors half the takings, it has given us enough money now to keep running for the rest of the year and beyond,” he said.

“We do need people to keep attending, however, and we are not averse to accepting individual donations or sponsorships from businesses.”

He said the cinema previously attracted so few customers probably because people had got out of the habit of attending over the past decade after the cinema gained a reputation as a “flea pit”.

The trust took over the Savoy Theatre in 2006 with the initial aim of saving the Grade II-listed building, after the previous private owner decided it was losing too much money. The group rescued and refurbished the venue, replacing seats, reopening the circle and installing hi-tech equipment.

Ruth Edwards, a Conservative councillor for Monmouthshire County Council, said it was vital to support local cinemas because once they closed they were lost to the community forever.

“It is wonderful that Mamma Mia! has helped to save The Savoy,” she said. “My age group remembers Abba more than the youngsters and even though there is a lot of technology now, you can’t beat the atmosphere of a theatre and the Savoy is wonderfully nostalgic and it’s local.”

appearances of Pierce Brosnan!!

Whaledreamers” is a documentary about the return of an ancient aboriginal whale tribe from South Australia. Declared extinct by the Australian government back in the 1950’s the film follows the Mirning people as they share their ability to communicate with whales, in their dreams and through song.

Through this film its an opportunity them to understand more the way of life and stories about a whale, how that we can treat the whale and how we can look after them, how we can look after plant earth before it’s too late.”

Over 15 years in the making, it’s release has been a long time coming. However, the heartfelt concern about whale killing still happening in world and a yearning for traditional cultures to stay alive meant there was serious commitment from many to the film.

The award-winning film is now being released across Australia with the rest of the world to follow shortly.
The film has appearances from some big names like Pierce Brosnan and Australian actors, Geoffrey Rush and Jack Thompson.Whaledreamers - the title alone evokes hypnotic visions of these most magnificent and ancient creatures. This visually stunning film offers an incredible glimpse into a rarely seen and scarcely understood tribal culture whose entire story of creation revolves around whales and has endured for centuries. The film passionately explores the connection between the subtle elegance of these "mothers of the sea" and ancient civilizations around the world whose culture and very existence is based on whales.

Brosnan & Keeley host Peace Day

"Peace Day"

 21st of September

There were plenty of kisses and smiles to go around for Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale, and Kingston at the Roots & Shoots Day of Peace at Griffith Park in LA on Saturday. Gavin caught up with Pierce Brosnan and played a few tunes on the guitar, while Kingston got his face all painted up to look like a tiger. Seems like this little guy has been having plenty of good times, but apparently he's still getting over some jealousy of sharing his parents with his baby brother. New additions can take a little getting used to for other kids in the house, but sounds like Kingston is already learning to love having another pint-sized playmate in the family.

Dear Friends,

I just wrapped on "The Greatest" with Susan Sarandon, and up next I'm shooting "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" directed by Danny De Vito, adapted from the book of the same name by Avi. I will be joined by Morgan Freeman and the young Saoirse Ronan starring in the title role.

Also, "Mamma Mia!" is rolling out a new "sing-along" version of the film on August 29th. I am very proud to be part of "Mamma Mia!" and I can honestly say it’s a good night out at the movies. So go, have a laugh, and sing-a-long to the songs of Abba.

I hope you all had wonderful and happy summer. Be safe. Do good things.

"Mamma Mia! Triumph @ awards

source ;contactmusic

Mamma Mia! was the main winner at the National Movie Awards, claiming two prizes at the London ceremony.

The West End adaptation, starring Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep, was named best musical while Streep beat off competition from the likes of Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker and Cate Blanchett to win the best female award.

Though its leading man Christian Bale missed out on the best male award - claimed by Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd - The Dark Knight triumphed over Iron Man, Hancock and The Incredible Hulk to be named best superhero.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which saw Harrison Ford returning as the adventurous archaeologist after 19 years, was named best action/adventure while Juno took the best comedy prize.

And Disney/Pixar's WALL-E, about the last robot on Earth, was named best family film over The Golden Compass, Kung Fu Panda and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

Best male nominees such as Pierce Brosnan, Will Smith, Depp and Bale did not attend the ceremony at London's Royal Festival Hall while Streep and Kylie Minogue were among celebrities to shun the red carpet in favour of entering via the back door.
