Brosnan wants ban on whale hunting

Brosnan wants ban on whale hunting

Actor-turned-environmentalist PIERCE BROSNAN is urging U.S. government officials to take a stronger stand against whale hunting in international waters.

The Irish actor has become passionate about preserving marine life since narrating new Disneynature documentary Oceans, which explores the seas and what lies beneath them.

And he’s outraged after learning whale hunting has continued in Japan, Norway and Iceland despite a global whaling moratorium, which took effect in 1986.

The U.S. and other anti-whaling countries recently sought to strike a deal to create an international monitoring system to ensure a steadily-declining whale hunt.

But Brosnan wants officials to take a no-tolerance policy: “They (U.S. government) seem to be in favour of allowing Japan and Norway to go out and hunt whales again. It means they can go out there and start killing whales. It’s in moratorium so it’s not determined how many they can kill. Normally, there’s no justification for killing these creatures. Scientifically, there’s no justification. So if you want to do something about stopping the possible slaughter of whales, then you have to pick up the phone and call The White House.”

And the movie star hopes his new nature film will encourage youngsters to fight to save the world’s whales.

He adds, “That is why this film is so important to be seen. I think it will inspire many young people to do good things for the ocean… That is why I’m so passionate about this movie, so people can go see it and hopefully oppose this deal agreement.

“These creatures are in jeopardy once more.”

Brosnan in " Salvation Boulevard"

Brosnan in " Salvation Boulevard"

A new comic-satiric-thriller by the director of the parental-nightmare horror film Joshua has some of its cast in place. Pierce Brosnan and Jennifer Connelly and Greg Kinnear and Ed Harris are on board, with Maria Tomei supposedly lining up.

Salvation Boulevard is based on a book by the author of the book that became Wag the Dog. This time, the guy who suggested that presidents (Bill Clinton was the one named at the time the movie came out, though not when the book came out) aren’t above foreign policy misadventures (i.e. WARS) just to change the subject from domestic problems, takes on evangelical Christians in a tale of a murder investigation about a Muslim student who allegedly killed a college professor who questioned the existence of God.

If Brosnan plays the burnt-out investigator, this would be quite a break for him .

April 22, 2010

Dear Friends,

Happy Earth Day,

In the spirit of Earth Day, I have some extremely important information to pass along to you. The Obama Admin (NOAA) is proposing an agreement among fellow member nations of the International Whaling Commission that would significantly undermine the protection of whales. It has been illegal to kill whales now for a generation, and tens of thousands of whales have been saved as a result. However, this deal would make it legal once again to kill them for profit. The United States needs to oppose this deal – and oppose it vigorously. The way forward for the IWC must not be a step backward into legalized killing of whales. During his campaign, President Obama said he would oppose the killing of these superlative creatures. Whales are the largest and most magnificent creatures ever to inhabit the Earth. They are not just commodities, but an integral part of our ecosystem. It is immoral and wrong to kill them. We owe it to our children and future generations to protect them.
Please call the White House and take a stand for the whales this Earth Day.

You can also celebrate this Earth Day 2010 by taking your family to see "Oceans," a documentary I narrate, produced by Disney Nature, the studio that presented the record-breaking film "Earth." Directors Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud feature spectacular never-before-seen imagery captured by the latest underwater technologies, offering an unprecedented look at the mysteries that lie beneath the seas while exploring the harsh realities and amazing creatures that live within. In honor of every guest who sees "Oceans" during opening week (April 22-28, 2010), Disney Nature will make a contribution to The Nature Conservancy to help save coral reefs.

Thank you for your support at the box office. I am pleased that "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" opened in February at #2 at the box office and that it has delighted young fans across America. "The Ghost Writer," based upon the book "The Ghost," written by Robert Harris and directed by Roman Polanski has received critical acclaim from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, The Hollywood Reporter, and Rolling Stone. On March 12th, "Remember Me" starring Robert Pattinson, Emilie de Ravin, Chris Cooper, Lena Olin, and myself opened nationwide. Kirk Honeycutt for The Hollywood Reporter wrote: "Remember Me" is a smart, engaging drama about young love flourishing amid sadness and loss. Claudia Puig for USA Today said "Remember Me" is a touching love story, but its broader tale of familial relations packs a greater emotional punch.

Also in theatres, "The Greatest," starring one of the most beautiful and candid women in cinema, Susan Sarandon and the luminous Carey Mulligan, which I produced with Beau Marie St. Claire, my partner at Irish DreamTime, and Lynette Howell. "The Greatest" which premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, was written and directed by Shana Feste, who made her debut as a first time director with this inspired independent feature film.

This spring I begin production on a new film titled "Salvation Boulevard" based on a novel of the same name, written by Larry Beinhart, (who also wrote "Wag the Dog"). "Salvation Boulevard" follows a former Deadhead-turned-born again Christian who finds himself on the run from fundamentalist members of his mega church who will do anything to protect their larger-than life pastor (yours truly). Greg Kinnear, Ed Harris, Marisa Tomei, Sam Elliot, Jim Gaffigan, and Jennifer Connolly round out this all-star cast. The film will be directed by George Radliff.

Wishing you a great year ahead. See you at the movies.

Love and only love

The 56-year-old actor has three biological and two adopted children with his late wife Cassandra Harris and current wife Keely Shaye Smith. Despite all the success he has had in his acting career, which has included a stint as legendary British spy James Bond, Pierce insists he is a “family man” at heart.

“There are many things I'm thankful for," he said. “I'm a family man within this crazy, egotistical profession and it's my sanctuary. It makes what I do all the more meaningful.”

Pierce’s first wife Cassandra died of ovarian cancer in 1991. They raised three children, Charlotte, 38, Christopher, 37, and Sean, 26, together.

The actor married Keely in 2001, and the pair have two sons, Dylan, 13, and seven-year-old Paris.

Pierce says he is in a very “happy” place in his personal and professional lives at the moment, and hopes his luck continues into the future.

“I've been blessed to be able to afford the good things of life," he told British newspaper The Daily Mirror. "I don't know if it would have happened if I hadn't had Bond in my career. I'm in a good place creatively. It's a fertile time... finding parts, acting, testing myself in roles and shaking up what went before.”

Brosnan rejects star label

Brosnan rejects star label

source ;  WENN.com

Pierce Brosnan has revealed that he doesn't believe he is a "star".

The actor explained that he doesn't want to think too highly of himself in case he misses out on good roles.

"I'm not a Hollywood star," he told the Daily Record. "Someday maybe - it's a work in progress."

Brosnan continued: "I play leads and I have had some success here and there. But I want to work, so how do you deal with wanting to work and not letting the ego of self get in the way of that? You can trip yourself up by saying that you don't want to play something because it's a supporting role and you could end up with a whole lot of nothing."

Brosnan also revealed that he is enjoying playing a wide variety of roles at the moment.

"I'm looking down the road and where I'm going to go," he said. "I'm an actor first and foremost. This is what I do."

Escaping 007's shadow

Escaping 007's shadow

source; www.latimes.com

Pierce Brosnan was sitting on the patio of a Beverly Hills restaurant sipping a beer last week when he was assailed by a gaggle of lively elderly women.

"You are gorgeous in person," exclaimed one lady with a thick New York accent who appeared to be in her 80s. "You look spectacular! I just got 20 years younger."

"You look gorgeous," Brosnan replied.

"Ugh! God, I'm in love. That's James Bond," she said, whispering to her friends as she shuffled away.

By the end of the spring, Brosnan, 56, will have appeared in five new films this year -- but to some, he'll always be James Bond. It's been eight years since the release of "Die Another Day," the last of the four films in which Brosnan reprised the iconic role of the unstoppable spy who loves women, fast cars and nifty gadgets. Just as one of his predecessors, Sean Connery, was able to leave behind the Bond role later in his career, Brosnan too is hoping that audiences will eventually be able to see him as more than just the international man of mystery.

That effort is reflected in Brosnan's latest spate of work. His most recent film, "The Greatest," on which he also served as a producer, opens Friday and tells the story of a father grappling with the death of his son. It shares in the serious tone of March's "Remember Me," in which he was embattled in a different kind of father-son relationship with teen heartthrob Robert Pattinson. There has also been Roman Polanski's "The Ghost Writer," in which Brosnan played an emotionally distant former prime minister, as well as his less dramatic turn as a bearded centaur in "Percy Jackson and the Olympians." Later this month, he'll serve as the narrator on the environmental documentary "Oceans."

The diversity in projects was a conscious choice, said Brosnan, who was dressed immaculately in a crisp button-up and blazer with nary a crease. His face too was virtually without wrinkles -- his hair, peppered with just a hint of gray, was the only sign of his age.

"I said to my agents, 'Look, it's time to really work, and to find and explore other avenues here as an actor,' " he explained. "It doesn't have to be leading roles. Let's not be tripped up by past information. It's time to try and have longevity as an actor."

It was a move that surprised even the director of "The Greatest," 33-year-old Shana Feste.

"Initially, we never thought we could get someone like Pierce, with me as a first-time director on a low-budget film. It was the jackpot of actors for us," said Feste. "You associate him with Bond and this very GQ, slick, sexy persona, but he's actually a real chameleon and I don't think mainstream audiences have seen that yet."

In reality, Brosnan has been distancing himself from that image since one of his first big post-Bond roles, 2005's "The Matador," for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for his turn as an eccentric, burned-out hit man.

"At the time, I was definitely still very connected to the image and the history of Bond," he said. "Even when I was in it. It just lives with you. It permeates your life. And you know that going in, but the reality of it -- the overcoat is really large, and can be quite heavy at times. So you have to break the shackles of that."

Greg Kinnear, who also starred in "Matador" and will play opposite Brosnan again in the upcoming "Salvation Boulevard," described the role as "the best thing that could have happened" to Brosnan.

"I was sitting there watching this man painting his toenails purple and be completely fearless," he said. "I don't think he was even consciously reinventing himself. I just think of him more as a character actor than as a franchise player."

Brosnan began exploring his passion for the arts as a teenager in England (where his Irish Catholic family moved when he was 11). After leaving school at 16, he found a home at the Oval House Theatre, then an English arts lab.

"I had a romantic notion of being in the movies, but the reality was in finding an education for myself and finding an articulation of speech and passion for myself as an actor," he said. To help find that identity, Brosnan enrolled at the Drama Centre in South London. After leaving, he landed work with such acclaimed directors as Tennessee Williams and Franco Zeffirelli. Then in 1981, he and his wife, Cassandra Harris (who died of ovarian cancer in 1991) took out a second mortgage on their Wimbeldon home to afford a move to the U.S. A year later, Brosnan landed a role on the NBC detective series "Remington Steele," which would run until 1987 and make him an American star.

"I was trained and led to believe, as a young actor out of drama school, that I could play anything," he said. "And you come to America and find yourself in a TV series -- which I am forever grateful for because it allowed me to have the career that I've got -- but I never expected to be branded so. Or to be pigeon-holed."

He's tried to separate his identity from his more recognized screen personas in part by forming his own production company, Irish DreamTime, in 1996, for which he's overseen eight films, with more in the pipeline.

"The company was also a good way to take things that might not come down the stretch," said Beau St. Clair, a partner in the company. "You can create new avenues for yourself because this town is so much like, if you play an assassin, you get assassin scripts. You've gotta keep going, 'Oh, no, look over here, see this? I can do this.' "

Ewan McGregor, Brosnan's costar in "The Ghost Writer," said he admires the actor's exploration.

"I like what Pierce has done since he's left Bond," McGregor said. "He's really playing interesting roles and characters we haven't seen him play before. I think he's enjoying a real golden age."

But Brosnan, who is remarried and has five kids, three from his first marriage and two boys with his current wife, bristles at the thought that to some -- like the group of women who had passed by earlier -- he's a movie star. Instead, he opts to describe himself as a working actor.

"Movie star? Clint [Eastwood] is a movie star. Jack [Nicholson] is a movie star," he said. "If I'm called a movie star, then great. I certainly wanted to be one. I dreamt about it, in my own quiet way. I definitely have played the leading man, but I also see myself as a character actor -- a working actor. It just fits me well. It gives me a grounding."
