Roman Polanski’s political thriller “The Ghost,” which just wrapped shooting at Studio Babelsberg outside of Berlin, has picked up E4 million ($5.45 million) in extra coin from the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF) and the German Federal Film Board (FFA).

The adaptation of Robert Harris’ novel, about a ghostwriter hired to finish the memoirs of a former British prime minister who is the target of a war crimes indictment, stars Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall and Olivia Williams.

The film, which began lensing in Germany in February, nabbed nearly $4.8 million from the DFFF, which is administered by the FFA, as well as $680,717 from the FFA directly.

Co-produced by Elfte Babelsberg Film, a unit of the studio’s Babelsberg Film division, “The Ghost” had already received $680,717 from regional subsidy org Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and $272,263 from Filmfoerderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein for a total of $6.4 million in grants.

The pic is also likely to land coin from regional subsidy org Filmbuero MV in the northern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The Summit Intl. film , which has yet to be picked up Stateside, is being released in Germany via Kinowelt.

Polanski, Robert Benmussa and Alain Sarde are producing “The Ghost” along with Henning Molfenter, Carl Woebcken and Christoph Fisser of Studio Babelsberg and Timothy Burrill of U.K. shingle Runteam.

“The Ghost” is the latest high-profile production to receive coin from the $80 million-a-year DFFF. In February Quentin Tarantino’s Cannes screener “Inglourious Basterds” nabbed $8.7 million.

Hollywood crew @ The Island of Sylt

Hollywood crew @ The Island of Sylt

(16th of March )

Usedom - center of the world, Hollywood, Martha`s Vineyard, all in one!
Today the whole Hollywood crew has fallen in! Roman Polanski, Pierce Brosnan, Ewen McGregor and some more . The film they are going to take is called Ghost and shall be a political thriller. That`s what the Pomeranian Radio man told us, and now we are all waiting for more news.

Actually, the setting is supposed to be Martha`s Vineyard, but firstly, Roman Polanski gets no visa for the US, and secondly, it is probably much cheaper to take the movie here, on the beach of Usedom (which is apparently much like the one of M`s Vineyard). Only trouble is, Mr. Polanski wants rainy weather, but, as the radio man rightly remarked, it was not a good idea to choose the island for the shooting which statistically has the most sunny hours in all of Germany!

But the whole set has been erected by now, even with 12 of those electric poles that are a feature of American life and which always fall down at storms and create blackouts (in Germany, most electric linings are running in the ground which leaves the landscape prettier and the storms more harmless. But that`s not my business). And on the road near the airport of Peenemünde even a yellow street line was painted on the ground, so that it all looks unmistakably like an American place. Haha.
Remember Peenemünde? That is the small town right on the Western end of Usedom where Wernher von Braun built his V2 rocket, and would have sent another rocket to the moon.

"The Ghost" start filming On Sylt

Roman Polanski has begun filming his new thriller ‘The Ghost’ on the German island of Sylt on the North Sea.

The local port was turned into a film studio and many wooden buildings were refaced to resemble American style houses. Sylt is being transformed to resemble the American popular vacation spot Martha’s Vineyard, on the Atlantic Ocean.

Polanski, who is not allowed into the United States because he has been convicted of raping a 13-year-old girl in 1973, chose instead to film in Germany.

The film crew is composed of 120 people. Ewan McGregor plays the lead role. Pierce Brosnan will also appear in the film.

The Polanski film crew will be on-location on the island until the 6 March. The film’s release date has not yet been announced.
