Mamma Mia! biggest selling product ever!

Mamma Mia! breaks more records

source ; http://www.marieclaire.co.uk

Mamma Mia! has become Amazon’s best-selling product ever.

A rush of sales in the lead up to Mother’s Day pushed the feel-good film ahead of the previous best-seller, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final book in JK Rowling's series about the boy wizard.

Mamma Mia! has become a sales phenomenon since it transferred from the West End stage to cinema screens in 2008. The film has taken a total of around £150 million at the British and UK box offices and nearly 1.7 million copies were sold on the first day of the DVD release last November.

The musical is based on the songs of the pop group Abba and stars Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan. ‘Quite simply, Mamma Mia! is the UK’s biggest selling product of the internet era,’ said Sarah Hughes of
Amazon UK.

‘It is a fun, feel-good film and some of its success can be attributed to the fact that it has offered a form of escapism during what have been difficult times in the UK over the last six months’.

The other entries in Amazon UK’s top five sales list are Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and the films The Dark Knight and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Other Rock albums include Metallica “Death Magnetic” #5, AC/DC “Black Ice” #2 and Coldplay “Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends”#1

Coldplay’s Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends was the best-selling album of 2008 globally according to new figures from IFPI, the body that represents the recording industry worldwide.

The band’s fourth studio album sold 6.8 million units worldwide, achieving greater sales than High School Musical 2 did to top the chart in 2007. It sold more downloads than any other album in digital history within a month of release. The band recently picked up three Grammy awards in the US, including Best Rock Album, and are nominated for four BRIT awards in the UK.

The cast of Mamma Mia! The Movie took the number three spot for their soundtrack album, which was released in July 2008. It contains many of ABBA’s hits sung by actors including Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Julie Walters. A deluxe version of the album includes behind the scenes footage from the shooting of the film. UMPG has 100% of the album.

The biggest-selling new artist worldwide in 2008 was Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy, whose Rockferry album, (which UMPG has six cuts on via Stephen Booker, Eg White, James Hogarth) placed fourth. Rockferry was the best selling album of the year in the UK and contains the hit singles Mercy and Warwick Avenue. Duffy is nominated for four BRIT awards in the UK.

Metallica claimed fifth spot with Death Magnetic, their ninth studio album which is published by UMPG 100% in the UK, released in September 2008. The band became the first ever to achieve five consecutive number one debuts in the Billboard 200 chart.

Rumours are growing that Universal is close to signing a deal for Mamma Mia! 2, an Abba-themed sequel to the most successful film ever at the UK box office. The movie made Universal £69.05m in Britain alone. Meryl Streep has blurted out her desire to work on a second film based on the musical, but could Universal double its takings if Pierce Brosnan promises he won't?

IFTAs International Jury Commends Irish Creative Talent
05 Feb 2009 |

Peter Jackson
The voting for the 6th Annual Irish Film & Television Awards has come to a close with the winners of this year’s Awards being voted for by a combination of the IFTA Academy and a selection of International Jury headed up by Oscar winning director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings Trilogy, King Kong).

The Jury is made up of Academy Voting Members across 14 different chapters of acting, writing, directing etc along with a selection of high profile industry experts from around the world who have cast their votes to decide the winners of this year’s Irish Film & Television Awards - announced at the Awards Ceremony on February 14th next.

The inclusion of international voting panels is seen as a platform which allows IFTA Nominees the opportunity for their work to be viewed by leading industry players throughout the world and highlights the creative work being produced in Ireland.

Oscar winning writer/director/producer Peter Jackson and his screenwriting partner Fran Walsh (who was also a member of the international panel) made the following comment on viewing the Irish submissions:

“Thank you for inviting us to be part of the celebration of the Irish film industry. It has been an honour to be on the jury for the Film and Television Awards. The films we saw were challenging and funny, passionate and lyrical - all of them unique stories, told with a singular Irish voice. Coming from a similar sized country, with limited resources, we know how important it is to protect and preserve cultural identity and that funding is always a struggle. However it is clear to us you are blessed with the most rare resource of all – an abundance of talent - both in front of and behind the camera! It was a pleasure to see such a wide range of truly adventurous film making; films that transcended the generic rules of Hollywood story-telling and succeeded on their own terms. The Irish film industry has a lot to be proud of – keep ‘em coming!”

Another member of the IFTA jury was Philip Edgar Jones, head of Endemol UK and the mastermind behind Channel 4’s Big Brother series; who said:

“When I sat down to watch 20 DVDs of Entertainment TV I thought I was in for an afternoon and evening of pure endurance, but as soon as I popped the first show in the machine and pressed play I was off on a journey that had me laughing at some really sharp comedy, totally engaged with some fabulously produced factual entertainment, full of great stories, and jigging along with some hugely entertaining music shows. All the shows had production values of the highest standard and what really shone through was a great sense of fun, warmth and affection. And I was thoroughly, thoroughly entertained.”

Also included among the IFTA Jury are; BAFTA winning producer Philippe Carcassonne (Ridicule); IFTA Lifetime member, actor & producer Pierce Brosnan; veteran indie-producer Bingham Ray; Emmy nominated sound expert Doug Murray (The Departed, Sex & The City); BAFTA winning television director Nikki Parsons (Strictly Come Dancing, SMTV); Oscar winning costume designer Trisha Biggar (Star Wars Episode 1, 2 & 3); Oscar winning make up artist Michele Burke (Dracula, Tropic Thunder); Cecelia Ahern, co-creator of hit US TV series Samantha Who?; and Ned Dowd, producer of titles such as Apocalypto, King Arthur and Veronica Guerin: Other international names serving on the IFTA Juries have been producer Ed Pressman (American Psycho), Oscar winning cinematographer Chris Menges (The Killing Fields); Oscar winning writer Christopher Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons) and Oscar winning sound designer Tom Johnson (Titanic, Terminator 2).

The 6th Annual Irish Film & Television Awards takes place on Saturday 14 February 2009 and will broadcast LIVE on RTÉ One at 9.30pm For further information about IFTA see

"Mamm Mia!" 10years

10years Mamma mia! documentary

source ; thestage.com

Cast members from the original and current West End stage production of Mamma Mia! will share their experiences of performing in the musical as part of a documentary celebrating its tenth anniversary in March.

The two-part documentary, called Mamma Mia! - The Real Story, will also include contributions from the production’s writer Catherine Johnson, who will discuss her original idea for the show.

Johnson will talk about how she insisted on retaining control of the movie version, which starred Meryl Streep, who will also be featured in the programme.

Streep will be joined by her co-stars Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth.

Mamma Mia! - The Real Story is being made by independent production company USP Content, and will be broadcast across Guardian Media Group’s Smooth Radio and Real Radio networks.

The Mamma Mia! documentary is part of a raft of six new documentaries being made for GMG’s stations, following the success of ten it broadcast last year as part of a push into documentaries.

GMG claims it was the first network to bring documentaries, traditionally only heard on BBC radio, to the commercial airwaves.

John Simons, GMG group programme director, said there was a big audience for arts-led programmes, and added that he was keen to follow the Mamma Mia! documentary with more programmes about British musicals.

“We have had great response from our audience to these documentaries, mainly because they don’t expect us to be doing it. I think Mamma Mia! - The Real Story will go down well, and then we will probably look at shows like Billy Elliot, or some of the other British-led phenomenons that have been so successful on the stage,” he said.

Mamma Mia!, the stage musical, first opened on March 23, 1999 in London and has since gone on to enjoy runs in countries such as the US and Australia.

The documentary, consisting of two 60-minute programmes, will be broadcast on Saturday, March 21 and March 28 at 1pm.

Mamma Mia! best ever selling dvd

    Biggest ever selling dvd

    source ; http://uk.reuters.com/

The film of the Abba-themed musical "Mamma Mia!" has become the biggest ever selling DVD and the first movie disc to top five million sales, the Official Charts Company said on Thursday.

The DVD success crowns the movie's lucrative run at the box office, where it earned more than 69 million pounds to be one of Britain's highest ever grossing films.

The movie attracted an enthusiastic older female audience for its feel-good recreations of Abba classics belted out by Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Julie Walters.

Only released on mid-November, the DVD sold just over five million copies, taking it past the 4.7 million racked up by the previous all-time best seller, "Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl."

Also benefitting from the "Mamma Mia!" effect was the film's soundtrack, which sold a million copies to become the year's best-selling compilation.

The Swedish pop group's greatest hits album Abba Gold also joined in the party, with sales of 410,000, making it the year's 19th best selling album.

The year's second most popular DVD was Batman movie "The Dark Knight," which sold 1.5 million copies.

In third place was another female-friendly DVD -- the film version of the hit U.S. series "Sex and the City."

Walt Disney-Pixar animated adventure "Ratatouille" was the fourth biggest hit DVD of the year, with magical fantasy "Stardust" coming fifth.

Online retailer Amazon said the Mamma Mia DVD had been its best selling item in the UK this year, beating JK Rowling's Harry Potter spin-off "The Tales of Beedle the Bard."

Top 10 biggest-selling DVDs in Britain from 1998 to 2008:

    1. "Mamma Mia! The Movie"

    2. "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl"

    3. "The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring"

    4. "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers"

    5. "Casino Royale"

    6. "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"

    7. "The Shawshank Redemption"

    8. "Gladiator"

    9. "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"

    10. "Shrek 2"

    Mamma Mia! beats Titanic

Universal Picture's romantic musical comedy Mamma Mia! The Movie has become the highest grossing movie ever to be released in the UK. It has beaten Titanic which held the record since 1998.

To date Mamma Mia! The Movie has grossed £69, 066, 035 to date as compared with Titanic 's £69,025,646.

David Kosse, president of Universal Pictures International said: "For Mamma Mia! The Movie to make history in this way and beat Titanic, which has held the record in the UK since 1998, is truly phenomenal. This film has exceeded our expectations and delighted audiences around the world since it opened in July. This box-office record is a tribute to producer Judy Craymer, director Phyllida Lloyd and our brilliant cast who worked so hard on this film."

Now in its 23rd week of release in the UK, Mamma Mia!The Movie has become the number one film of the year in 15 countries including Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Greece, Hungary, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Cyprus, Iceland, Slovenia and Sweden.

    Mamma Mia Sequel??

    Mamma Mia sequel??

Veteran actress Meryl Streep is keen to bring movie musical Mamma Mia! back to the big screen for a second time but only if movie bosses can "get those fabulous boys back."

Streep starred in the Abba-inspired summer hit alongside Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard, who all threw themselves into the singing and dancing roles.

And Streep would love to reunite the cast for a follow-up.

She says, "Grand Mamma Mia! I like it! I'm up for doing a sequel, as long as you can get those fabulous boys back! It's so gratifying it has been this phenomenon around the work. It says there's an audience for something that appeals to a lot of women, something that might make them some money too."

Movie musical Mamma Mia! has become a major box office smash internationally, grossing more than $559 million worldwide.

"Mamma Mia" fastest selling dvd (UK)

    "Mamma Mia!" still braking records

LONDON -- Phyllida Lloyd's "Mamma Mia! -- The Movie" has danced its way into the record books in the U.K. becoming the fastest selling DVD of all time after a day's trading.

Universal Pictures International Entertainment said the title posted unit sales of just short of 1.7 million, sinking its nearest rival "Titanic" which sold 1.1 million units on its first day on sale back in 1998 here.

The DVD success follows hot on the heels of what has become a boxoffice sensation for the musical movie, which features the hits of Swedish powerpop quartet Abba.

The title sung its way to just shy of 67 million pounds ($103 million) at the U.K. boxoffice, making it the highest grossing British movie of all time on these shores. It qualifies as British under the U.K. government’s cultural test.

UPIE president Eddie Cunningham said the movie's DVD success here is being mirrored around the world. "Already launched in Australia, "Mamma Mia! -- The Movie" is set to enter the top five DVDs of all time ‘down under,’ and the Nordics are shipping an industry record number of units. Following the U.K. success, we are very excited about our forthcoming DVD launches around the world."

The film stars Meryl Steep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Stellan Skarsgard and Dominic Cooper.

Produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, the picture was executive produced by Tom Hanks, Rita
Wilson, Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Mark Huffman
