Rumours are growing that Universal is close to signing a deal for Mamma Mia! 2, an Abba-themed sequel to the most successful film ever at the UK box office. The movie made Universal £69.05m in Britain alone. Meryl Streep has blurted out her desire to work on a second film based on the musical, but could Universal double its takings if Pierce Brosnan promises he won't?

"Mamm Mia!" 10years

10years Mamma mia! documentary

source ; thestage.com

Cast members from the original and current West End stage production of Mamma Mia! will share their experiences of performing in the musical as part of a documentary celebrating its tenth anniversary in March.

The two-part documentary, called Mamma Mia! - The Real Story, will also include contributions from the production’s writer Catherine Johnson, who will discuss her original idea for the show.

Johnson will talk about how she insisted on retaining control of the movie version, which starred Meryl Streep, who will also be featured in the programme.

Streep will be joined by her co-stars Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth.

Mamma Mia! - The Real Story is being made by independent production company USP Content, and will be broadcast across Guardian Media Group’s Smooth Radio and Real Radio networks.

The Mamma Mia! documentary is part of a raft of six new documentaries being made for GMG’s stations, following the success of ten it broadcast last year as part of a push into documentaries.

GMG claims it was the first network to bring documentaries, traditionally only heard on BBC radio, to the commercial airwaves.

John Simons, GMG group programme director, said there was a big audience for arts-led programmes, and added that he was keen to follow the Mamma Mia! documentary with more programmes about British musicals.

“We have had great response from our audience to these documentaries, mainly because they don’t expect us to be doing it. I think Mamma Mia! - The Real Story will go down well, and then we will probably look at shows like Billy Elliot, or some of the other British-led phenomenons that have been so successful on the stage,” he said.

Mamma Mia!, the stage musical, first opened on March 23, 1999 in London and has since gone on to enjoy runs in countries such as the US and Australia.

The documentary, consisting of two 60-minute programmes, will be broadcast on Saturday, March 21 and March 28 at 1pm.

Mamma Mia Sequel??

Mamma Mia sequel??

Veteran actress Meryl Streep is keen to bring movie musical Mamma Mia! back to the big screen for a second time but only if movie bosses can "get those fabulous boys back."

Streep starred in the Abba-inspired summer hit alongside Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard, who all threw themselves into the singing and dancing roles.

And Streep would love to reunite the cast for a follow-up.

She says, "Grand Mamma Mia! I like it! I'm up for doing a sequel, as long as you can get those fabulous boys back! It's so gratifying it has been this phenomenon around the work. It says there's an audience for something that appeals to a lot of women, something that might make them some money too."

Movie musical Mamma Mia! has become a major box office smash internationally, grossing more than $559 million worldwide.

MAMMA MIA! TRIUMPHANT AT NATIONAL MOVIE AWARDS

source ;contactmusic

Mamma Mia! was the main winner at the National Movie Awards, claiming two prizes at the London ceremony.

The West End adaptation, starring Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep, was named best musical while Streep beat off competition from the likes of Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker and Cate Blanchett to win the best female award.

Though its leading man Christian Bale missed out on the best male award - claimed by Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd - The Dark Knight triumphed over Iron Man, Hancock and The Incredible Hulk to be named best superhero.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which saw Harrison Ford returning as the adventurous archaeologist after 19 years, was named best action/adventure while Juno took the best comedy prize.

And Disney/Pixar's WALL-E, about the last robot on Earth, was named best family film over The Golden Compass, Kung Fu Panda and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

Best male nominees such as Pierce Brosnan, Will Smith, Depp and Bale did not attend the ceremony at London's Royal Festival Hall while Streep and Kylie Minogue were among celebrities to shun the red carpet in favour of entering via the back door.

Brosnan fancied Streep

Brosnan reckons the Mamma Mia! star is hot

Pierce Brosnan once had a crush on his Mamma Mia!co-star Meryl Streep, 59.

And he signed up for the film as soon as he found out she was in it.

‘When the gig first came in and they said “Meryl Streep, Greece”, I just said “I'm in.”,’ he tells Weekend.

‘I didn’t have a clue about what it was about. Just that Meryl, the blonde I fancied a lot as a young lad at drama school, was in it

MAMMAS CAN SING!

MAMMAS CAN SING!

source ; the NewYorkpost

'I CAN sing better than she can. If Madonna gets it [the lead role in 'Evita'] I'll rip her throat out!" said Meryl Streep back in 1996.

SPEAKING OF singing, this very Sun day the actress supreme, Christine Baranski, will depart the Longacre Theatre after the matinee of "Boeing Boeing" and step onto Jeff Zucker's GE helicopter. That will land her in Southampton in time for the gala Hamptons premiere of the new big hit movie musical "Mamma Mia!"

Although she's the star of the film, Meryl Streep, won't be attending - her co-star, the handsome Pierce Brosnan, will join Ms. Baranski for this exclusive event honoring Evelyn Lauder and her Breast Cancer Foundation. Forget about the guest list; it's stellar, and how the small Southampton movie theater will accommodate all this high power, I don't know.

"money, money, money"

money, money, money

LONDON (Hollywood Reporter) - No matter how many blockbusters there are, Universal's screen version of the global hit stage musical "Mamma Mia!" is the most fun to be had at the movies this or any other recent summer.

Teenage boys may be glued to the latest action adventure, but the rest of the family will have a rollicking good time dancing in the aisles to Swedish pop group ABBA's irresistible songs. It's a delightful piece of filmmaking with a marvellous cast topped by Meryl Streep in one of her smartest and most entertaining performances.

After its world premiere in London on Monday, the film opens in the U.K. on July 4 and in North America on July 18. It will surely follow the stage show around the world in pleasing audiences and raking in what one of the infectious songs celebrates: "Money, Money, Money."

Credit goes to the original show's creators -- producer Judy Craymer, director Phyllida Lloyd and writer Catherine Johnson -- for seeing their vision through to such a polished and enjoyable picture. Hanging a tale of a woman whose daughter night have been fathered by one of three attractive men on a bunch of ABBA songs sounds simple, but its simplicity is as deceptive as the masterfully crafted songs themselves.

Streep plays Donna, a former singer who has raised daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) alone at a fading resort on a remote Greek island. Sophie finds her mother's diary from 20 years earlier and discovers that there are three men who might be her father. About to be married to boyfriend Sky (Dominic Cooper), she sends invitations to the celebration to all three on behalf of her mother but without telling her.

Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard, as the possible dads, show up on the island where Donna is readying the wedding, helped by her two best pals (Julie Walters and Christine Baranski). The scene is set for songs, dancing and romance, all staged brilliantly, with many energetic and colourful performers beautifully shot.

The songs from Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus have memorably sturdy lyrics that the filmmakers weave with great skill into their story. All of the players perform with gusto, including Skarsgard, Brosnan and Firth who, far from embarrassing themselves, sing well and deserve high praise for being such good sports.

Seyfried and Cooper make appealing juvenile leads, while Walters and Baranski contribute greatly to the film's good-natured comedy. Each has a big solo number, with Baranski belting out "Does Your Mother Know?" to a randy beach bum and Walters entreating a reluctant groom with "Take a Chance on Me."

Streep is sensationally good in rendering the whole yarn credible and in performing dramatically moving songs such as "Slipping Through My Fingers," sung to her departing daughter, and "The Winner Takes It All," to a lost love. It's no stretch to think of her performance in Oscar terms, ranking with such previous musical winners as Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

And when Streep teams with Walters and Baranski for dynamic and crowd-pleasing numbers such as "Dancing Queen," "Mamma Mia!" and "Super Trouper," there's not an audience anywhere that won't be smiling.

Brosnan about making of "Mamma Mia"

 Brosnan talks about making of

"Mamma Mia"

source: www.newkerala.com

London, July 7 : Irish/American actor Pierce Brosnan revealed that going back to Pinewood studio where he filmed the James Bond movies was a lot of fun, especially since the role he was playing at that time was the total opposite.

Brosnan had returned to the studio for the filming of the musical Mamma Mia, in which he had a singing part.

"It was great fun going back to the scene of the crime doing this movie, kicking over the ghosts left right and centre," Daily Mirror quoted him as saying laughingly.

"Daniel Craig and the company weren't there so we had it all to ourselves. But I did have this image of me strutting down the corridors in my spandex suit and high heels bumping into Dan looking all butch and Bond like.

That would have been interesting," he said.

In the new movie Mamma Mia, Brosnan plays one of three men who may or may not be the father of Meryl Streep's teenage daughter.

According to the script, he travels to her Greek island home for her wedding where passions are rekindled with her mum.

The whole storyline is played out against a medley of catchy Abba hits belted out by Brosnan and co, who said he took the role without realising how much singing he'd have to do.

"I have sung before in a film of mine called Evelyn," he said.

"I sang Irish pub songs and ballads but they are a lot simpler than the complexities of Abba.

"I have had a singing teacher in LA for many, many years just to work on my voice as an actor.

"This was the last thing I expected in this career of mine. But when the offer came in with a phone call from the States and they said Meryl Streep, Mamma Mia!, Greece... I said 'Great, I'm in.'

"I didn't even ask how much, I just said I would do it. The next night I went to see the stage show and I saw the set and then they started singing and I thought 'oh dear, oh dear'. But by the end of the evening I was enchanted by the whole thing," he added.

Rehearsing in the studio and then spending weeks in the sun with Streep and co-stars Colin Firth and Julie Walters turned out to be more like fun than work.

"It was the best summer of my life," he said.

"I had the greatest experience and most pleasurable time working with them all.

"Working with Julie and Meryl was immense. I am a huge fan of both ladies and we had the best of times together.

"We had five weeks of rehearsals at Pinewood Studios and I didn't know why it was so long. But I became aware that we were becoming a theatrical company.

"We would go in and work on different songs and we would be sweating and tripping over each other and making fools of ourselves and making friendships and having the time of our lives," he added.

Bringing the timeless lyrics and melodies of iconic super group ABBA to movie audiences, Summer 2008 is the season for Mamma Mia!

The three women who created the worldwide smash stage hit—global producer Judy Craymer, writer Catherine Johnson and director Phyllida Lloyd—repeat their roles in bringing this joyful, musical story to the big screen. The Mamma Mia! film is produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman.

Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper join Streep in this celebration of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads.

An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna (Streep) is about to let go of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), the spirited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—practical and no-nonsense Rosie (Julie Walters) and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya (Christine Baranski)—from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own.

On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities.

Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA’s songs from “Dancing Queen” and “S.O.S.” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” Mamma Mia! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found."
