Save the Dolphins!!! "the cove"

Save the Dolphins!

by Keely & Pierce Brosnan

There is a cove in Taiji, Japan that is completely off limits to the public. Activists have long suspected that dolphins and porpoises were entering the cove and not coming out, but there was little evidence of what took place in those closely guarded waters. Film director Louie Psihoyos and prominent dolphin advocate Ric O’Barry assembled a team of activists, divers and special effects experts to embark a on covert mission to infiltrate the cove in the dead of night. It sounds like the plot of a Hollywood spy thriller; but in this film the danger is real.

We have long been passionate about marine mammal protection. After watching The Cove, we were astonished to discover that more than than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are slaughtered in Taiji each year, and that their meat — which contains toxic levels of mercury — is sold to consumers and in grocery stores across Japan. Without this kind of investigative journalism, the plight of dolphins and the safety of some of Japan’s seafood may not have been adequately reported. This powerful and moving film is an urgent cry for help — and now that the public finally knows the truth, we must demand change.

IFTAs International Jury Commends Irish Creative Talent
05 Feb 2009 |

Peter Jackson
The voting for the 6th Annual Irish Film & Television Awards has come to a close with the winners of this year’s Awards being voted for by a combination of the IFTA Academy and a selection of International Jury headed up by Oscar winning director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings Trilogy, King Kong).

The Jury is made up of Academy Voting Members across 14 different chapters of acting, writing, directing etc along with a selection of high profile industry experts from around the world who have cast their votes to decide the winners of this year’s Irish Film & Television Awards - announced at the Awards Ceremony on February 14th next.

The inclusion of international voting panels is seen as a platform which allows IFTA Nominees the opportunity for their work to be viewed by leading industry players throughout the world and highlights the creative work being produced in Ireland.

Oscar winning writer/director/producer Peter Jackson and his screenwriting partner Fran Walsh (who was also a member of the international panel) made the following comment on viewing the Irish submissions:

“Thank you for inviting us to be part of the celebration of the Irish film industry. It has been an honour to be on the jury for the Film and Television Awards. The films we saw were challenging and funny, passionate and lyrical - all of them unique stories, told with a singular Irish voice. Coming from a similar sized country, with limited resources, we know how important it is to protect and preserve cultural identity and that funding is always a struggle. However it is clear to us you are blessed with the most rare resource of all – an abundance of talent - both in front of and behind the camera! It was a pleasure to see such a wide range of truly adventurous film making; films that transcended the generic rules of Hollywood story-telling and succeeded on their own terms. The Irish film industry has a lot to be proud of – keep ‘em coming!”

Another member of the IFTA jury was Philip Edgar Jones, head of Endemol UK and the mastermind behind Channel 4’s Big Brother series; who said:

“When I sat down to watch 20 DVDs of Entertainment TV I thought I was in for an afternoon and evening of pure endurance, but as soon as I popped the first show in the machine and pressed play I was off on a journey that had me laughing at some really sharp comedy, totally engaged with some fabulously produced factual entertainment, full of great stories, and jigging along with some hugely entertaining music shows. All the shows had production values of the highest standard and what really shone through was a great sense of fun, warmth and affection. And I was thoroughly, thoroughly entertained.”

Also included among the IFTA Jury are; BAFTA winning producer Philippe Carcassonne (Ridicule); IFTA Lifetime member, actor & producer Pierce Brosnan; veteran indie-producer Bingham Ray; Emmy nominated sound expert Doug Murray (The Departed, Sex & The City); BAFTA winning television director Nikki Parsons (Strictly Come Dancing, SMTV); Oscar winning costume designer Trisha Biggar (Star Wars Episode 1, 2 & 3); Oscar winning make up artist Michele Burke (Dracula, Tropic Thunder); Cecelia Ahern, co-creator of hit US TV series Samantha Who?; and Ned Dowd, producer of titles such as Apocalypto, King Arthur and Veronica Guerin: Other international names serving on the IFTA Juries have been producer Ed Pressman (American Psycho), Oscar winning cinematographer Chris Menges (The Killing Fields); Oscar winning writer Christopher Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons) and Oscar winning sound designer Tom Johnson (Titanic, Terminator 2).

The 6th Annual Irish Film & Television Awards takes place on Saturday 14 February 2009 and will broadcast LIVE on RTÉ One at 9.30pm For further information about IFTA see

"The Ghost" casting & shooting update

The Ghost "casting & shooting update

source ; http://www.firstshowing.net

After nearly two decades, the controversial but extremely talented Oscar winning filmmaker Roman Polanski will finally get back to directing with a contemporary thriller titled The Ghost, to begin shooting in Germany on February 4th of this year. We covered the original news last year when Nic Cage was still attached, but AICN broke the story today about the latest casting details after receiving the press release for the film, which also ably describes the sprawling adaptation of Robert Harris' novel of the same name. Cage has been replaced by Ewan McGregor and will be joined by Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, and others.

"The movie tells the story of a former British Prime Minister, Adam Lang (Brosnan), who is holed up on an island off the Eastern seaboard of the USA in midwinter, writing his memoirs. When his long-standing aide drowns, a professional ghostwriter (McGregor) is sent out to help him finish the book. The anonymous ghostwriter is quickly drawn into a political and sexual intrigue involving Lang's wife, Ruth (Olivia Williams) and his aide (Kim Cattrall). Hanging over Lang is the threat of a war crimes trial and a mysterious secret from his past that threatens to jeopardize international relations."

As you probably caught, along with Polanski behind the camera and the page, we'll be seeing the now powerhouse cast of Ewan McGregor (taking over for Nic Cage), Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, Tom Wilkinson, Jim Belushi, and Olivia Williams in front of the camera. I really can't express my excitement for this project enough. I love Roman Polanski. He is a modern day master, deservedly on the same level as the likes of Scorsese, Spielberg, Coppola, and Scott. He's an auteur to the highest degree. And it's great to see him returning to what first made him so great.

Pierce Brosnan serenades the sea

 Pierce Brosnan interview

From being the womanizing spy, Pierce Brosnan has moved on quite a bit in life! He is now starring in a musical called Mamma Mia! And how did he prepare for the part? By performing to the ocean on the beach near his Kauai, Hawaii retreat!

Pierce said, I walked up and down the coast and sang karaoke to my own voice for about six weeks. But the first batch of beach rehearsals didn't do him much good when he had to perform in front of producers and his co-stars for the first time. I went to New York for the first rehearsals, and I sounded dreadful. I quietly freaked out!

But the Bond in him did not let him give up. He returned to Hawaii and took on a more intensive practice programme and worked even harder on hitting the high notes. He adds, In the end, they liked it so much they added a verse to my big song.
