Dear Friends,

Happy Earth Day,

In the spirit of Earth Day, I have some extremely important information to pass along to you. The Obama Admin (NOAA) is proposing an agreement among fellow member nations of the International Whaling Commission that would significantly undermine the protection of whales. It has been illegal to kill whales now for a generation, and tens of thousands of whales have been saved as a result. However, this deal would make it legal once again to kill them for profit. The United States needs to oppose this deal – and oppose it vigorously. The way forward for the IWC must not be a step backward into legalized killing of whales. During his campaign, President Obama said he would oppose the killing of these superlative creatures. Whales are the largest and most magnificent creatures ever to inhabit the Earth. They are not just commodities, but an integral part of our ecosystem. It is immoral and wrong to kill them. We owe it to our children and future generations to protect them.
Please call the White House and take a stand for the whales this Earth Day.

You can also celebrate this Earth Day 2010 by taking your family to see "Oceans," a documentary I narrate, produced by Disney Nature, the studio that presented the record-breaking film "Earth." Directors Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud feature spectacular never-before-seen imagery captured by the latest underwater technologies, offering an unprecedented look at the mysteries that lie beneath the seas while exploring the harsh realities and amazing creatures that live within. In honor of every guest who sees "Oceans" during opening week (April 22-28, 2010), Disney Nature will make a contribution to The Nature Conservancy to help save coral reefs.

Thank you for your support at the box office. I am pleased that "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" opened in February at #2 at the box office and that it has delighted young fans across America. "The Ghost Writer," based upon the book "The Ghost," written by Robert Harris and directed by Roman Polanski has received critical acclaim from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, The Hollywood Reporter, and Rolling Stone. On March 12th, "Remember Me" starring Robert Pattinson, Emilie de Ravin, Chris Cooper, Lena Olin, and myself opened nationwide. Kirk Honeycutt for The Hollywood Reporter wrote: "Remember Me" is a smart, engaging drama about young love flourishing amid sadness and loss. Claudia Puig for USA Today said "Remember Me" is a touching love story, but its broader tale of familial relations packs a greater emotional punch.

Also in theatres, "The Greatest," starring one of the most beautiful and candid women in cinema, Susan Sarandon and the luminous Carey Mulligan, which I produced with Beau Marie St. Claire, my partner at Irish DreamTime, and Lynette Howell. "The Greatest" which premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, was written and directed by Shana Feste, who made her debut as a first time director with this inspired independent feature film.

This spring I begin production on a new film titled "Salvation Boulevard" based on a novel of the same name, written by Larry Beinhart, (who also wrote "Wag the Dog"). "Salvation Boulevard" follows a former Deadhead-turned-born again Christian who finds himself on the run from fundamentalist members of his mega church who will do anything to protect their larger-than life pastor (yours truly). Greg Kinnear, Ed Harris, Marisa Tomei, Sam Elliot, Jim Gaffigan, and Jennifer Connolly round out this all-star cast. The film will be directed by George Radliff.

Wishing you a great year ahead. See you at the movies.

Love and only love

Dear Friends,

Spring greetings.

Hope this letter finds you well.

I recently returned from a 45-day press tour to promote several new films I am proud to have been a part of. I am pleased that "Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightening Thief" opened in February at #2 at the box office and that it has delighted young fans across America. "The Ghost Writer," based upon the book "The Ghost," written by Robert Harris and directed by Roman Polanski has received critical acclaim from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, The Hollywood Reporter, and Rolling Stone. "The Ghost Writer" is rolling out to wider audiences this week. Claudia Puig for USA Today said

Next up, "The Greatest," starring one of the most beautiful and candid women in the cinema, Susan Sarandon and the luminous Carey Mulligan, which I produced with Beau Marie St. Claire, my partner at Irish DreamTime, and Lynette Howell. "The Greatest" which premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, was written and directed by Shana Feste, who made her debut as a first time director with this inspired independent feature film.

I am currently shooting the new film "Remember Me" with the young and talented Robert Pattinson (Twilight) on location in New York. Directed by Allen Coulter and written by Will Fetters and Jenny Lumet, Remember Me is a tale of two lovers whose relationship is threatened as they try to cope with their respective family tragedies. I will be playing Robert’s father, while Lena Olin has been cast as his mother. Other cast members include Chris Cooper and Emilie de Ravin.

I recently wrapped production on Percy Jackson, based on the popular book series by Rick Riordan. The film, directed by my friend Chris Columbus, with whom I worked on Mrs. Doubtfire, centers on a teenage boy who discovers he's the descendant of a Greek god. Percy Jackson then sets out on the adventure of a lifetime to settle an on-going battle between the gods. Cast members include Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Keener, Logan Lerman, Kevin McKidd, Melina Kanakerides, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario and yours truly.

In April I completed shooting The Ghost with Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Roman Polanski. This is the first contemporary thriller he has directed and produced in more than twenty years. Based on the book of the same name by best-selling author Robert Harris, The Ghost details the story of a former British Prime Minister and his anonymous ghostwriter who is drawn into a political and sexual conspiracy. The talented cast includes Ewan McGregor, Tom Wilkinson, Kim Cattrall, Timothy Hutton, Jim Belushi, Robert Pugh, and Olivia Williams.

Last summer my company Irish DreamTime produced The Greatest, starring Susan Sarandon, Carey Mulligan, Aaron Johnson, Johnny Simmons, Zoe Kravitz, and myself, which was well received at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. First time writer/director Shana Feste's richly evocative script results in a compelling drama that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. The Hollywood Reporter asserts The Greatest "pulls off a stunning fete" and "...performances are daring and brilliantly shaded." The Greatest was purchased by Senator Entertainment and will be released this fall.

Wishing you a wonderful summer.

See you at the movies.

Love and only love,

Greetings One and All,

I am currently making a picture called Heaven and Earth which is shooting entirely on location in South Africa. Heaven and Earth is the true story of James Miranda Barry (portrayed by Natasha McElhone) who was appointed Army Surgeon at Cape Colony and rose through the ranks to eventually become Surgeon General of the British Army. Only when the undertaker was laying out the body of the distinguished physician was a startling discovery made - Dr. James Barry was in fact a woman.

What a joy it has been to watch Mamma Mia make so many people happy. Not a day goes by without someone saying they have seen it, not once, but several times. You can now purchase Mamma Mia on DVD for the holidays.

Last summer my company Irish DreamTime made an independent film called The Greatest, which has been accepted into the 2009 Sundance Film Festival competition. The beautiful and talented Susan Sarandon joined first time writer/director Shana Feste and a young company of gifted actors to make a movie which explores love, loss and the heartbeat of family life. Up next I will begin principal photography on a film entitled Heaven and Earth which is shooting entirely on location in South Africa. Heaven and Earth is the true story of James Miranda Barry (portrayed by Natasha McElhone) who was appointed Army Surgeon at the Cape Colony and rose through the ranks to eventually become Surgeon General of the British Army. This spring, I will be working with Roman Polanski on a film based on the book of the same name, The Ghost which details the story of a ghost writer crafting the memoirs of the British Prime Minister. When "the Ghost" uncovers a myriad of secrets, his own life is put in jeopardy. The ensemble includes Ewan McGregor as The Ghost and Kim Cattrall as my mistress. The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle will begin production in summer 2009 followed by The Thomas Crown Affair 2 in the fall.

In the spirit of giving this holiday season please consider making a small contribution to those in need. The following organizations were on our holiday gift giving list:

-
The Jane Goodall Institute
-
Roots and Shoots
-
American Red Cross
- Kauai Humane Society

These funds will be used to sponsor environmental education and youth based humanitarian programs, provide clean, safe drinking water to a developing nation by distributing thousands of portable water purifiers, offer relief services for the victims of the Southern California Wildfires, and care for numerous stray animals while also supporting the spay and neuter shelter program on the island of Kauai.

Holiday Blessings from my home to yours and every good wish for the coming year ahead. May the spirit of the season fill you with love, joy and peace.

Brosnan's fall greetings

Newsletter October 2008

Fall Greetings One and All,

What a joy it has been to watch Mamma Mia make so many people happy. Not a day goes by without someone saying they have seen it, not once but several times. Recently, I met an elegant and spry lady celebrating her 87th birthday and she told me she had seen the movie 9 times because it made her feel so happy. Her beautiful daughters and grandchildren were all nodding in agreement beside her. I don't think any of us thought Mamma Mia would touch so many people’s lives around the world. But it has, and I do believe it will continue to do so for many years to come. As the late great Sydney Pollack said to me one night at the Deauville Film Festival when I was promoting Thomas Crown... "Enjoy it, they don’t come round that often." He was right. (Now there’s a guy I would have loved to have worked with.)

I made an independent film over the summer with my company, Irish DreamTime, called The Greatest. The beautiful and talented Susan Sarandon joined first time writer/director Shana Feste and a young company of gifted actors to make a film which explores love, loss and the heartbeat of family life. Up next I will be making a movie with Roman Polanski called The Ghost. The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle has been pushed to begin production in summer 2009 and The Thomas Crown Affair 2 will follow shortly thereafter.

This fall, change is in the air. Now more than ever we must have the courage to choose a leader who will bring us hope in this ever changing world. I am proud to be an American. I have been blessed to earn a good life here, to raise a family, and to be part of a country and a nation that I will always call home. I follow a long line of fellow Irish men and women who have come to this land to begin a new life. Whatever your choice, please vote on November 4th. To quote Malcolm Fraser:

"America remains the world’s best hope for a free and open and peaceful society."

Here's to unity, compassion between us all, and kindness.

Dear Friends,

I just wrapped on "The Greatest" with Susan Sarandon, and up next I'm shooting "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" directed by Danny De Vito, adapted from the book of the same name by Avi. I will be joined by Morgan Freeman and the young Saoirse Ronan starring in the title role.

Also, "Mamma Mia!" is rolling out a new "sing-along" version of the film on August 29th. I am very proud to be part of "Mamma Mia!" and I can honestly say it’s a good night out at the movies. So go, have a laugh, and sing-a-long to the songs of Abba.

I hope you all had wonderful and happy summer. Be safe. Do good things.

Love,
