Brosnan thankful for 2nd wife

Brosnan Grateful For Second Wife Keely

source ; www.contacmusic.com

PIERCE BROSNAN has heaped praise on his wife KEELY for encouraging him to continue to mourn his late spouse CASSIE, who died of cancer.

The GoldenEye star gave up his career to nurse his first wife, Australian actress Cassandra Harris, as she fought ovarian cancer - and he was devastated when she finally succumbed to the disease in 1991.

And the actor admits he was lucky to find love again with writer Keely Shaye Smith, who he married in 2001, because she understands his profound feelings for Harris.

Brosnan explains, "We talk about her (Harris). I am blessed with my wife, Keely, who has always been remarkably kind and compassionate. Cassie is remembered with great love, remembered dearly. Keely has always accommodated that, and we have now been together 17 years. You know, I have the luck of the Irish. I've had great luck in finding a partner.

"Cancer is a hard one to live with. To see someone suffer for four years, when the moment comes it's a relief that the suffering has gone. It's very hard to talk about death with somebody, but one day she said, 'It doesn't look so good for me.' We held each other and wept and had a cup of tea. A cup of tea always sorts things out, and then you sort out your priorities

Fans rave about Brosnan as Pattinson hides in trailer
Irish star wins over new fans with smooth moves!

Irish star Pierce Brosnan was a huge hit with fans in New York today as he took time out to pose for photographs and sign autographs.

Brosnan, who is filming "Remember Me," in New York arrived back on the set yesterday after a vacation in Hawaii.

He plays the father to "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson in the film which shows how the family tries to come to terms with the death of Pattinson's brother.

There was tight security in the Irish stronghold of Maspeth in Queens as the burial scenes were filmed in Mount Olivet cemetery.

However, Brosnan waved away security and came out to visit with the fans who had gathered there.

"You're all here for me," he joked as little Diane Morrisey rushed forward to have her picture taken.

Morrissey said she was thrilled to see Brosnan and was also hoping to see Brosnan's co-star Pattinson.

However, there was no sign of Pattinson who stayed inside his trailer.

Pattinson has been under virtual siege by female fans in New York but Brosnan, who was a huge hit in the Bond movies, takes it all in his stride.

Rita Malone from County Cork was there with her daughter Eilish and she said Brosnan was a proper gentleman.

"We went downtown yesterday to see him and he was just great, so he was," she said.

"He spent about 15 minutes chatting to the fans and posing for the pictures with the children.

"It's so nice to see that he's still a true Irish gentleman."

Dublin woman Bernice Hughes was similarly impressed.

"He might be from County Meath," she said, referring to the inter-county football rivalry, "but he's a total gentleman."

"He came out to chat to everyone and asked them what they were doing here.

"It's so refreshing to see someone so comfortable with their fame and being so nice."

Official Newsletter June 16th

Official Newsletter June 2009

source ;

June 16, 2009

Dear Friends,

Schools out for summer and I am en route to Hawaii for a brief visit. I will be starting a new film “Remember Me” with the young and talented Robert Pattinson (Twilight) on location in New York this summer. Directed by Allen Coulter and written by Will Fetters and Jenny Lumet, Remember Me is a tale of two lovers whose relationship is threatened as they try to cope with their respective family tragedies. I will be playing Robert’s father, while Lena Olin has been cast as his mother. Other cast members include Chris Cooper and Emilie de Ravin.

I recently wrapped production on Percy Jackson, based on the popular book series by Rick Riordan. The film, directed by my friend Chris Columbus, with whom I worked on Mrs. Doubtfire, centers on a teenage boy who discovers he's the descendant of a Greek god. Percy Jackson then sets out on the adventure of a lifetime to settle an on-going battle between the gods. Cast members include Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Keener, Logan Lerman, Kevin McKidd, Melina Kanakerides, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario and yours truly.

In April I completed shooting The Ghost with Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Roman Polanski. This is the first contemporary thriller he has directed and produced in more than twenty years. Based on the book of the same name by best-selling author Robert Harris, The Ghost details the story of a former British Prime Minister and his anonymous ghostwriter who is drawn into a political and sexual conspiracy. The talented cast includes Ewan McGregor, Tom Wilkinson, Kim Cattrall, Timothy Hutton, Jim Belushi, Robert Pugh, and Olivia Williams.

Last summer my company Irish DreamTime produced The Greatest, starring Susan Sarandon, Carey Mulligan, Aaron Johnson, Johnny Simmons, Zoe Kravitz, and myself, which was well received at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. First time writer/director Shana Feste's richly evocative script results in a compelling drama that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. The Hollywood Reporter asserts The Greatest "pulls off a stunning fete" and "...performances are daring and brilliantly shaded." The Greatest was purchased by Senator Entertainment and will be released this fall.

Wishing you a wonderful summer.

See you at the movies.

Love and only love,

Pierce Brosnan and his wife Keely Shaye-Smith were snapped leaving the West Wing of the White House shortly before noon today after receiving their first tour of the White House and meeting with staff to discuss the preservation of whales, reports Politico.

Brosnan, global ambassador of whale conservation campaigns for the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), said he didn't meet President Barack Obama but was impressed by his first glimpse inside the White House. "I've always viewed it from afar so to be in the hallowed halls was ... truly an honor,” he said.

Crisis hits "Heaven and Earth"

Crisis hits "Heaven and earth"

source ; contactmusic.com

Hollywood actor PIERCE BROSNAN is the latest celebrity feeling the effects of the global economic crisis - his upcoming big-screen outing has reportedly been delayed due to a lack of funds.
The former James Bond star signed up to play Lord Charles Somerset in Heaven and Earth, a $20 million (£14 million) biopic of James Miranda Barry - a woman doctor who masqueraded as a man to follow a medical career.
Filming was due to start on the big budget movie last Thursday (12Feb09) with a release date planned for later this year (09).
But the economic crisis has put paid to those plans - with U.K. newspaper The Independent reporting an unidentified British backer has failed to provide promised funds in time, forcing filming to be delayed

"Heaven and earth" set to a halt

Work on Brosnan film in Cape grinds to a halt

By Natasha Joseph

The filming of a major movie starring former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan is "on ice" for at least a month due to reported "cash-flow problems".

"Furious" crew members don't believe they will be paid and are not certain that the filming of the romantic epic Heaven and Earth in Cape Town will ever get off the ground.

They claim the producers have already racked up enormous debts.

But the movie's executive producer says filming is to resume in about six weeks and although R10-million has been invested in the project so far, it is "a gross exaggeration" to describe this as debt
A massive set erected in Strandfontein will have to be dismantled

Crew members say everything was in place for filming to start late last week, but they were told on Friday that work on the film would have to be halted while producers tried to come up with funding to clear their debts and get the cameras rolling.

A massive set erected in Strandfontein will have to be dismantled this week because another film is due to be shot there
. Heaven and Earth is a joint project of British-based production company Focus Films and Spier Films, which has offices in London and Cape Town.

According to a synopsis posted on Focus Films's website, the movie tells the story of army surgeon Dr James Miranda Barry, whose skills took the British garrison at the Cape by storm during the early 19th century.

Barry was actually a woman masquerading as a man, and was forced to assume the disguise because women were not allowed to enter the medical world as surgeons.

She was rumoured to be the lover of Cape Governor Lord Charles Somerset.

According to a disgruntled crew member, who asked to remain anonymous, British and Australian crew members flew into Cape Town from the beginning of December and were "guaranteed two weeks' work".

"We were told they were waiting to sign lead actors before the money would be green-lighted."

After two weeks, she said, producers told the crew that the project had been "green-lit" and filming would start in February

"Heaven and earth" delayed

Filming of Cape drama delayed by cash crisis

By Bronwynne Jooste

A funding crisis is threatening to scupper one of the biggest film projects being undertaken in Cape Town this year - Heaven and Earth, starring Hollywood star Pierce Brosnan.

Producers of the multi-million- rand feature film, based on the life of the Cape Colony's medical inspector James Barry, are putting their faith in bridging finance while they wait for promised funds to arrive.

Pre-production has already started in the city, with significant expenses already incurred.

The finance promised by a backer from Britain has been delayed several times.

Brosnan has already arrived in the city to start shooting. He plays Cape governor Lord Charles Somerset, believed to have been Barry's lover.

The drama tells of a secret love affair between Somerset and James Miranda Barry, who was a woman posing as a man. Some of the film is set to be shot at The Castle.

Filming was scheduled to start on Thursday, but was delayed on account of the cashflow problems.

It is now scheduled to start tomorrow, but it is not clear whether funding will come through.

The film is being produced by British production company Focus Films. It approached Spier Films, which has offices both in Cape Town and London, to be the official South African co-producer but the deal will only become official once all legal and financial documentation is signed.

Until then, Focus Films will be the lead producer, and has already pumped millions into the project since pre-production started in December.

Spier Films also produced the award-winning musical, U-Carmen eKhayelitsha.

Michael Auret, the joint managing director of Spier Films, said although Focus Films had been sourcing bridging finance, they had "met all their financial obligations" to this point.

"Prior to the closing of the financial agreements, Focus Films have been responsible for the pre-production of the film and have to date invested more than R10-million on preparing this wonderful project."

He said they expected legal agreements to be signed before shooting was scheduled to start on Sunday, although pre-production has already begun.

Auret said a range of factors was holding up the process.

These included negotiations with lawyers, adding that it was "not unusual" for these agreements to be finalised long after shooting had commenced.

"The legal agreements have not closed as yet, but we believe this will happen soon and that shooting will start as scheduled.

"Focus Films have been meeting their financial obligations in the pre-production period, as far as we are aware, and will continue to do so via bridging loans until the legal agreements are finalised and the rest of the finance flows into the production."

David Pupkewitz, the film's executive producer with Focus Films, was unavailable for comment but the Focus Films website states that Heaven and Earth has a $15m budget

Sexiest Male 2009

Sexiest Male 2009

source ; http://www.rna-uk.org/

British actor Richard Armitage has leapt from last year's 4th place to this year topping the ratings in the Romantic Novelists' Association 2009 Valentine's poll, to take the title of Sexiest Thing on Two Legs, beating top Hollywood stars to the number one spot.

Johnny Depp, who topped last year's poll, was pushed firmly into second place, with Hugh Jackman and George Clooney mere also-rans. "Richard Armitage took 20% of the vote, more than double the count of any other male on the list," said the RNA pollster. "He was a clear winner from the off."

The RNA is not alone in admiration of the actor, as numerous online Richard Armitage fan sites will testify. The ardency began with North and South, grew by leaps and bounds with his appearance as the leather-clad baddie in Robin Hood, and shows no sign of diminishing as Spooks takes to the airwaves.

"It's a coup for Britain," said one starstruck writer, "not just for sexy Richard."

According to romantic novelists, the sexiest male celebrities of 2009 are:

1Richard Armitage
2Johnny Depp
3Hugh Jackman
4George Clooney
5Daniel Craig
6Sean Bean
7Alan Rickman
8David Tennant
9Pierce Brosnan
10Gerard Butler

Exclusive Brosnan interview "The Greatest"

Brosnan interview " The Greatest"

Pierce Brosnan may tell you that singing with Meryl Streep in Mama Mia was intimidating, but in his latest movie, The Greatest, that just premiered at Sundance to rave reviews, the Irish actor goes places, emotionally, he has never gone before, playing a grief-stricken father opposite Susan Sarandon.

In this exclusive interview, Brosnan talks about the challenges he had preparing for this role and the conscious decision he made not to have in family around during filming. He talked one-on-one to Paul Fischer in Park City.

Question: Did this film come to you as an actor first and then as a producer? Or were they both kind of – synchronized?

Brosnan: They came to Irish DreamTime as producing, acting. And Bo said, “Read this.” And I read it, and I thought it was wonderful, then I threw it under the bed, and I said, “I just – let it lie there.” Literally put it under the bed. I have a little house, out and away. I didn’t really want to go there, just because it was so well-founded by Shana, and the emotions of it. And then Bo kept on at me, saying, “Read it again. Read it again.” And I read it again. I said, “All right, let’s meet with Shana and Lynette, the producer.” And I said, “Okay. Let’s go ahead, let’s do it.”

Question: Was this, in some ways, the most intimidating character you’ve had to play for a while? I mean, I know that Mamma Mia had a different sense of intimidation about it, but in terms of getting into a character, the acting side of it. Where you had to go to places where you haven’t really been for a while.

Brosnan: Well, I haven’t played this emotional register since I was really a young actor. I mean, I’ve steered away from it, in some respects, and taken an easier road. And also, I haven’t been really offered them. So that’s the great thing about having your own company. You get offered these pieces like The Matador, or Evelyn. There was enough of my own life history in there as a father, to explore this character. I know a little bit about grief.

Question: I was going to ask you. I mean, you’ve had it rough.

Brosnan: We all have it rough one way or the other, at some point.

Question: Did you reflect on that time in your life, in order to play the grief?

Brosnan: You certainly use your life’s history of pain. There’s enough pain in there to draw upon. And it was also in the writing, too. When writing like this comes along, it taps in there pretty easily. And then your casting. You begin to cast, and you look – I call Susan up. And I say, “Look. I hear that you like this.” I left a message on her machine, and I said, “I love it. I’m gonna do it, come hell or high water. And I don’t know what you’re doing over the summer, but why not?” And she called me back the next day, and she said, “You got me with ‘why not?’” So once Susan was on board, she is such a – such a talent. And fearless. Then y begin to put the cast together. Carey Mulligan’s screen test was beautiful. So when you’re with great actors, then you get a lot. You get a lot back. Then you just have to prepare yourself emotionally. And it’s – ironically, the first scene we shot, the very first day of shooting, and my very first day, was my breakdown sequence at the bed. That was it. And there was no way around it. I said, “Hey, guys. Come on, give me a break here. You know, I haven’t swam in these waters in a long time.” So – there was no way around it. You know, when you’re on a small budget, and small time restraint. We had to shoot that day, there and then. It was the only day we could get the hospital.

Question: How do you leave something like this behind at the end of the work day? Do you just look forward to going back and spending time with your own family, and reminding yourself that –

Brosnan: Well, work like this is best done alone and I was away from the family. It’s sometimes better to be by yourself. It’s much more productive, when you’re doing something like this.

Question: Was that very reflective for you?

Brosnan: Yeah. You reflect. You become very solitary about it. And, you know, you have your journal, and you have your art, and paint, and you have your music, guitar, or whatever. And you have all those tools at hand, and your music, and your hotel room. And just – it was in New York City, I adore. So it gave me time to be by myself and walk in the park, and think about this bad [INAUD], and grace. And just – live the part.

Question: Do you see this film as being a film about healing, as well as about grief?

Brosnan: I think it’s a study on grief, but it’s definitely about rebirth, and definitely about healing. It’s about that. It’s unabashedly about grief. I mean, the sequence in the limo. The accident, and the scene in the limo, the hammer drops there for the audience. And you are with this family. You’re with this mother and father and son, and their grief.

Question: Now when the camera is close up on you, there is a distinct feeling that everything you’re saying, you’re saying in your face. How difficult is it for you to do silence, as an actor?

Brosnan: Hopefully you’ve got an inner life going. Hopefully, you have something there. You’re present, in the piece. And I don’t know how to talk about it, really.

Question: Is it a difficult process? Do you intellectualize it? Or is it very instinctive for you?

Brosnan: It’s really instinctive. I’m not very good at discussing it. And, you know, we had a week of rehearsals. And Susan is a very articulate lady, and she could talk on any subject. I’m much quieter. And Carey was very articulate. The director, Shana, is very bright and articulate. I find it very hard to express myself. I can do it, I hope. But I’ve never been good at talking about it, really. I can talk about it up to a point. But thenif it’s good, if it’s on the page, let me do it. Let me move it. Let me get up and act it.

Question: Does this encourage you to want to go now, for things that really get you to act in ways that you’ve never had a chance to do?

Brosnan: Yes. Yes. You know, I wish I’d done it sooner. But I hadn’t. I came to America, and I did Remington and I should have probably explored the avenues of drama. But I kind of coasted on a nice plateau.

Question: Well, Bond is something that obviously gave you opportunities that you would never have, perhaps, had.

Brosnan: Yeah. The Bond franchise was brilliant timing. And was – I’m forever grateful to play that role, and to be part of that coterie of men, that small club. And, you know, from that, it allowed me to create Irish DreamTime, and make my own movies, which wouldn’t necessarily come my way. Like The Matador, or like this film, The Greatest.

Question: What’s your next project? Do you know?

Brosnan: With Marleen Gorris, it’s called Heaven and Earth and I’m going off to South Africa, to do this film, set in 1826, about the first Governor of Capetown. It’s a true story about Lord Charles Somerset, who falls in love with his doctor. And then I’m going to work with Mr. Roman Polanski on The Ghost.

Question: And what’s happening with Topkapi?

Brosnan: We are full steam ahead. Full steam ahead. If we do not have it by this year, then we shall just say we gave a best effort. But Mary Parent is a magnificent supporter of the piece. Mr. Paul Verhoeven is still with us as a director and we have great executives over there at MGM now, who are passionate to make this film. So, we have a fabulous writer.

Question: Were you surprised that the biggest film you’ve starred in since James Bond was a musical?

Brosnan: Yes. Yes. I would never have guessed that, in a million years. But it was a great film to be a part of. but for me, I just love the world of independent filmmaking, going off and making these pictures. And if 12 people see it, then so be it. But just to make movies – it’s great if something like this comes along, and possibly can have a high profile.

Question: I know I’m not the only one who cried so much during The Greatest..

Brosnan: It’s good to cry. It’s good to cry. I mean, it’s great to laugh, but it is great to cry, because there’s so much pain in us all, that to connect to something like this, it’s good.

Question: Is this the best time for you in your life, personally and professionally? Are you having the best time in your life?

Brosnan: I’ve had a great time. I’ve had a great time all the way through this life of acting. I’ve loved every moment of it. Everything I’ve done, I’ve enjoyed. Whether they’ve hated it, criticized it, never saw it. I – just that I got to work and make a living, and create a life for my wife and children.

Question: How do you remain so nice?

Brosnan: I don’t know. I don’t know. I have no idea. I just like people, and I love what I do and, you know, you just keep showing up.

Question: Do you still live in Hawaii?

Brosnan: We’ve been living out there, yeah. We live in Kauai. We’re up there, but we’re back in Malibu now. We have to. The boys have got to go to school, and stuff like that. I’ve got to pay attention to some of these pictures going on I’m trying to do. And it’s very hard to do it from over there.
