Organizers of the 60th Berlin International Film Festival say Roman Polanski’s latest movie, The Ghost Writer, will have its premiere at the event in February.

Polanski’s movie was among a first batch of entries in the festival’s main competition that was announced Tuesday. The event runs from Feb. 11-21 and is the first of the year’s major European film festivals.

In the film, Pierce Brosnan stars as a former British prime minister who’s writing his memoirs with the help of a ghostwriter, played by Ewan McGregor. It’s Polanski’s first film since 2005’s Oliver Twist.

The 76-year-old director is currently under house arrest in Switzerland, where he awaits possible extradition to the U.S. on a 32-year-old charge of sexual misconduct.

Dear Friends,

Happy Holidays.

On February 12th, 2010, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, based on the popular book series by Rick Riordan will be released. This film, directed by my friend Chris Columbus, with whom I worked on Mrs. Doubtfire, centers on a teenage boy who discovers he's the descendant of a Greek god. Percy Jackson then sets out on the adventure of a lifetime to settle an on-going battle between the gods. Cast members include Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Keener, Logan Lerman, Kevin McKidd, Melina Kanakerides, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario and yours truly.

On March 12th, 2010, Remember Me with the young and talented Robert Pattinson (Twilight, New Moon) is scheduled for release. Directed by Allen Coulter and written by Will Fetters and Jenny Lumet, Remember Me is a tale of two lovers whose relationship is threatened as they try to cope with their respective family tragedies. I will be playing Robert’s father, while Lena Olin has been cast as his mother. Other cast members include Chris Cooper and Emilie de Ravin.

The Ghost directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Roman Polanski will make its debut at the Berlin Film Festival on February 13th, 2010. This is the first contemporary thriller he has directed and produced in more than twenty years. Based on the book of the same name by best-selling author Robert Harris, The Ghost details the story of a former British Prime Minister and his anonymous ghostwriter who is drawn into a political and sexual conspiracy. The talented cast includes Ewan McGregor, Tom Wilkinson, Kim Cattrall, Timothy Hutton, Jim Belushi, Robert Pugh, and Olivia Williams.

In March 2010, the Irish DreamTime produced film The Greatest, starring Susan Sarandon, Carey Mulligan, Aaron Johnson, Johnny Simmons, Zoe Kravitz, and myself, which was well received at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and the 2009 Hampton’s Film Festival will be released. First time writer/director Shana Feste's richly evocative script results in a compelling drama that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. The Hollywood Reporter asserts The Greatest "pulls off a stunning fete" and "...performances are daring and brilliantly shaded."

See you at the movies.

Polanski puts "The Ghost" on hold

Roman Polanski arrest puts latest film on hold; 'Ghost' stars Pierce Brosnan

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Roman Polanski's arrest in Switzerland has left his latest film in limbo, with several months of work before the political thriller is ready for theaters.

Polanski's agent, International Creative Management chief Jeff Berg, said Polanski had completed much of the editing on "The Ghost." But other post-production work, including music scoring and sound mixing, had yet to be done, Berg said.

Based on the provocative novel by Robert Harris, "The Ghost" stars Pierce Brosnan as fictional former British leader Adam Lang and Ewan McGregor as a ghostwriter hired to help complete his memoirs. The cast includes Kim Cattrall, Tom Wilkinson, Olivia Williams and James Belushi.

The novel caused a stir in Britain for Lang's resemblance to former Prime Minister Tony Blair. Like Blair, Lang is a once-popular leader brought down by his allegiance with the United States in the war on terror.

While the film does not yet have a U.S. deal, it has distribution in many overseas territories, among them Germany, where it was shot early this year, and France, where Polanski lives. He fled America in 1978 after pleading guilty to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl in Los Angeles.

Polanski was arrested over the weekend in Zurich, where he had traveled to receive a lifetime achievement award from a film festival. His lawyer said Polanski will fight U.S. attempts to have him returned to the United States.

"The Ghost" is the first Polanski movie with a U.S. setting since 1974's "Chinatown." Locations in Germany had to stand in for the story's New England settings.

"There's a lot of psychological intrigue in the story, as well as espionage and politics, and most of the action takes place in an oceanfront house during the middle of winter — all of it classic Polanski territory," Harris said when the film was announced in 2007.

Berg said Polanski usually finishes his films before lining up U.S. distribution, so the completed movie can be shopped around.

"There is always interest in movies that Roman distributes," Berg said. "It should be accepted on its own merits, but we feel highly confident we'll find proper distribution."

Polanski's films include the horror hit "Rosemary's Baby," the costume drama "Tess" and the Holocaust saga "The Pianist," which earned him the 2002 Academy Award for best director.

A Holocaust survivor himself, Polanski has endured other dire trauma, including the murder of his pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate, by followers of cult figure Charles Manson in 1969.

With Polanski jailed, it's unknown when work might resume on "The Ghost." Berg said he is confident Polanski will put his legal troubles behind him and finish the film.

"I'm always optimistic when it comes to Roman," Berg said. "He's strong, and he has survived every situation imaginable."

Setbuilding for Roman Polanski's "The Ghost"

Setbuilding started in Germany for "The GHost"

SOURCE ; contactmusic.com

Fugitive filmmaker ROMAN POLANSKI has found a cunning way to shoot his new movie in the U.S. and U.K. without landing in jail - he is building giant replicas in a German film studio. The Polish-born director has lived in Paris, France for the past 32 years since fleeing America, after he was convicted, in 1977, of having sex with a 13-year-old girl.
His new movie The Ghost has crucial scenes set in New England and London, England - but Polanski is unable to return to the U.S. without being arrested, and if he sets foot in Britain he'll be extradited back to be sentenced.
So the 75-year-old is constructing look-a-like locations at the Studio Babelsberg in Potsdam-Babelsberg.
The movie, based on Robert Harris' novel, will begin shooting later this year (09), starring Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, Ewan MCGregor, Tom Wilkinson, and Jim Belushi.

"The Ghost" casting & shooting update

The Ghost "casting & shooting update

source ; http://www.firstshowing.net

After nearly two decades, the controversial but extremely talented Oscar winning filmmaker Roman Polanski will finally get back to directing with a contemporary thriller titled The Ghost, to begin shooting in Germany on February 4th of this year. We covered the original news last year when Nic Cage was still attached, but AICN broke the story today about the latest casting details after receiving the press release for the film, which also ably describes the sprawling adaptation of Robert Harris' novel of the same name. Cage has been replaced by Ewan McGregor and will be joined by Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, and others.

"The movie tells the story of a former British Prime Minister, Adam Lang (Brosnan), who is holed up on an island off the Eastern seaboard of the USA in midwinter, writing his memoirs. When his long-standing aide drowns, a professional ghostwriter (McGregor) is sent out to help him finish the book. The anonymous ghostwriter is quickly drawn into a political and sexual intrigue involving Lang's wife, Ruth (Olivia Williams) and his aide (Kim Cattrall). Hanging over Lang is the threat of a war crimes trial and a mysterious secret from his past that threatens to jeopardize international relations."

As you probably caught, along with Polanski behind the camera and the page, we'll be seeing the now powerhouse cast of Ewan McGregor (taking over for Nic Cage), Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, Tom Wilkinson, Jim Belushi, and Olivia Williams in front of the camera. I really can't express my excitement for this project enough. I love Roman Polanski. He is a modern day master, deservedly on the same level as the likes of Scorsese, Spielberg, Coppola, and Scott. He's an auteur to the highest degree. And it's great to see him returning to what first made him so great.

"The Ghost" Pierce & Nicolas

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The last I remember, I thought Roman Polanski was making his disaster epic titled Pompeii. But Polanski eventually left that project and now he's already started casting his next film, The Ghost. Adapted from Robert Harris' novel of the same name, the story is about a ghostwriter hired to write the memoirs of an ex-Prime Minister. MTV has learned that both Pierce Brosnan and Nicolas Cage have joined the film. Brosnan will play the British Prime Minister Adam Lang and Cage will play the currently unnamed ghostwriter. The film is actually a thriller that takes a turn when the ghostwriter learns details about a scandal which threatens to engulf the ex-Prime Minister. Can Brosnan and Cage pull it off?

Polanski is writing The Ghost himself, with the assistance of Robert Harris. Polanski explain that he has "been looking for a political thriller to direct for some time, and The Ghost could not be more perfect. Robert has constructed a novel with such suspense, it is hard to put it down." Harris also wrote the book that Polanski's Pompeii was going to be based off of, but this is another one of his British thrillers. The story was partially inspired by Tony Blair, with whom Harris was once friends with. The book has been referred to as "one of the most politically informed novels of the year" and will hit shelves in August. You can pre-order a copy on Amazon.com.

Brosnan I like, in the right roles, but Cage I don't. He hasn't yet got himself back on the right track yet. And I'm not sure a Roman Polanski political thriller is going to be the venue for his return. I think I'm interested in this project more for its politics than its story and relationship between the ghostwriter and Prime Minister. Polanski still won't step foot inside of the US, so I'm wondering if he has a bit of disdain for the States and if it will show up in this film. At the very least we can expect a solid suspense film that will hopefully captivate us to the end. And it will truly be a question of whether Brosnan and Cage can pull it off.

Brosnan in Roman Polanski's "The Ghost"

"The Ghost"

Nicholas Cage and Pierce Brosnan are to take the lead roles Roman Polanski's latest thriller THE GHOST.

"I'm going to go off and work with Mr Roman Polanski and Nic Cage on a film called 'The Ghost,'" Brosnan told MTV. "It's a thriller."

The film is based on a Robert Harris novel and will feature Brosnan as ex-British prime minister Adam Lang, who enlists Cage's character to write his memoirs.

Cage must choose between loyalty and his personal safety when he learns that Lang is embroiled in a political scandal.

Speaking to Variety when the project was first announced, Polanski commented: "I have been looking for a political thriller to direct for some time, and 'The Ghost' could not be more perfect."

Polanski, who directed the critically-acclaimed noir thriller CHINATOWN, recently criticised Hollywood studios for giving too much away in movie trailers, reports Showbiz Spy.
