Mamma Mia! has become Amazon’s best-selling product ever.

A rush of sales in the lead up to Mother’s Day pushed the feel-good film ahead of the previous best-seller, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final book in JK Rowling's series about the boy wizard.

Mamma Mia! has become a sales phenomenon since it transferred from the West End stage to cinema screens in 2008. The film has taken a total of around £150 million at the British and UK box offices and nearly 1.7 million copies were sold on the first day of the DVD release last November.

The musical is based on the songs of the pop group Abba and stars Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan. ‘Quite simply, Mamma Mia! is the UK’s biggest selling product of the internet era,’ said Sarah Hughes of
Amazon UK.

‘It is a fun, feel-good film and some of its success can be attributed to the fact that it has offered a form of escapism during what have been difficult times in the UK over the last six months’.

The other entries in Amazon UK’s top five sales list are Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and the films The Dark Knight and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

"Mamma Mia" fastest selling dvd (UK)

"Mamma Mia!" still braking records

LONDON -- Phyllida Lloyd's "Mamma Mia! -- The Movie" has danced its way into the record books in the U.K. becoming the fastest selling DVD of all time after a day's trading.

Universal Pictures International Entertainment said the title posted unit sales of just short of 1.7 million, sinking its nearest rival "Titanic" which sold 1.1 million units on its first day on sale back in 1998 here.

The DVD success follows hot on the heels of what has become a boxoffice sensation for the musical movie, which features the hits of Swedish powerpop quartet Abba.

The title sung its way to just shy of 67 million pounds ($103 million) at the U.K. boxoffice, making it the highest grossing British movie of all time on these shores. It qualifies as British under the U.K. government’s cultural test.

UPIE president Eddie Cunningham said the movie's DVD success here is being mirrored around the world. "Already launched in Australia, "Mamma Mia! -- The Movie" is set to enter the top five DVDs of all time ‘down under,’ and the Nordics are shipping an industry record number of units. Following the U.K. success, we are very excited about our forthcoming DVD launches around the world."

The film stars Meryl Steep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Stellan Skarsgard and Dominic Cooper.

Produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, the picture was executive produced by Tom Hanks, Rita
Wilson, Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Mark Huffman

UK crown's "Mamma mia!"

Mamma Mia tops Uk boxoffice of all time

LONDON — Feel-good tuner “Mamma Mia!” has become the biggest grossing Brit pic of all time at the U.K. box office.

The Meryl Streep starrer, which boasts a running cume of $109.1 million (£67 million), achieved the distinction by passing “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” which took $107.6 million in the U.K.

The pic also has a very good shot at becoming the biggest grossing film of all time at U.K. wickets. It trails only James Cameron’s “Titanic,” which grossed $112.5 million.

Last weekend, the Abba musical dipped 40% to take $420,217 at 284 screens — good enough for ninth spot in the charts in its 16th session.

If it does not sink the “Titanic” on this run, future re-releases should do the trick.

This weekend, “Mamma Mia!” will have to play second fiddle to the opening of “Quantum of Solace,” which should dominate cinema biz.

“Mamma Mia!” world premiered in London June 30 and has never looked back, capturing the imagination of Brit auds. Boosted by strong reviews — “a guilty pleasure powerful enough to turn the stoniest heads,” said the Times — it opened boffo and has shown awesome traction ever since.

Maintained by strong word of mouth and, later in the run, the popularity of sing-a-long screenings, the musical has proved a positively whammo hit for Universal.

U.K. bookers attribute the sensational perf to the enduring popularity of all things Abba, auds’ appetite for feel-good fare (possibly to alleviate the misery of the depressing state of the economy), a strong maintaining campaign by Universal and the attractiveness of the British-Irish heavy cast, which includes Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Julie Walters and fast-rising thesp Dominic Cooper.
